How to call a phone from your computer
Learn how to call a phone from your computer: choose a browser service, check audio, confirm US calling access and costs, and save the next step.
You can call a phone from your computer using a calling service, a microphone and an internet connection. The other person can answer on an ordinary phone; they do not necessarily need the same app. A browser tab alone cannot connect a call to the telephone network.
This guide focuses on manually calling US customers who requested or expect your call. It explains the options first, then the KVWang setup and checks.
Choose how your computer will make the call
| Method | What you use | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Browser calling service | A supported browser and a voice-service account. | Calling approval, destination coverage, microphone access, business number and price. |
| Installed softphone | A desktop telephone application, with a compatible calling account. | Account configuration, supported operating system, number and calling fees. |
| Phone-to-computer connection | A compatible mobile phone linked to a computer. | Device compatibility and whether calls use your mobile service and plan. |
Choose a browser service if you want a calling workspace without first installing a separate softphone. Read what a browser phone does for the technology and setup differences. KVWang is not a phone-mirroring app.
What do you need before calling a phone from a computer?
- A computer with a working microphone and speakers, or a headset.
- A stable internet connection and permission for the calling workspace to access the microphone.
- A calling service that supports your caller location and the customer's actual number.
- An approved outgoing number and an account with calling enabled, where required by the service.
- A clear reason for the expected call, plus somewhere to record its outcome.
WebRTC supports real-time browser audio; a voice service is still needed to reach a telephone number. Browser microphone access also requires a secure context and permission; see MDN's microphone-access documentation.
How to make a phone call from your computer with KVWang
Start with the public simulation if you only want to explore. The demo uses fictional contacts, places no calls, uses no microphone and does not charge you. The steps below describe the separate live workspace.
- Create or open your workspace. Continue with Google or use your existing account. Registration and permission to make real calls are separate.
- Request calling approval. Apply in the signed-in Calls workspace. Include your team's caller location, customer destinations and intended use. Check the workspace notice rather than assuming registration enables calling.
- Confirm your assigned business number. Wait until the team and outgoing number are ready. Follow the published activation steps; a payment return page is not proof that a number is active.
- Check the microphone and speaker. Use Check microphone and Check speaker in the workspace. Grant microphone permission when prompted. If access was previously blocked, review browser site permissions and operating-system privacy settings. Hearing a speaker test does not prove both sides of a real call can hear one another.
- Select the customer and review the cost. Read their previous notes, enter the supported US destination, choose customer follow-up or requested callback, and confirm the customer expects the call. Use Check call cost and review the quote and available allowance or credit.
- Start the call manually. Call only when the workspace shows the required setup is complete and the control is available. Keep the calling tab and audio device connected. End the call when the conversation is finished.
- Save the outcome and next step. Record what was agreed and, if useful, the next follow-up date. Review the call's final billing status separately from its on-screen timer. A saved date does not currently send an automatic reminder or redial.

What if the call will not start, or the other person cannot hear you?
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Calling is not enabled | Review the approval notice and assigned number. Contact support if setup is incomplete; do not pay repeatedly to fix approval. |
| Destination unavailable | Check the actual route, not only the +1 prefix. Unsupported numbers cannot be enabled by changing the browser. |
| No microphone input | Check the selected input device, browser permission and operating-system privacy settings. |
| You hear audio, but the customer does not | Check the microphone and connection. Record the attempt time and what each side heard for support; a local test alone does not verify the telephone route. |
| A payment seems incomplete | Use Check payment under Billing and follow the current activation notice before trying another payment. |
Use the audio and calling checklist. If you need help, email [email protected] with your team, browser, displayed error and approximate attempt time. Do not send passwords, payment details or customer phone lists.
Is computer calling free, and which numbers can you call?
A free website demo is not free telephone service. Check the calling plan, included minutes, rounding, extra usage and activation requirements on the current pricing page before subscribing. Approved invitation calls and paid usage follow their respective workspace conditions.
KVWang currently supports approved ordinary US destinations. Emergency, toll-free, premium and other unsupported routes are unavailable. A +1 prefix is not sufficient to establish eligibility. Inbound answering, SMS, automatic dialing, call recording and transcription are not part of this webphone release.
If your team is outside the US, your caller location needs a separate check. A US outgoing number does not guarantee access from every country. Read calling US customers from abroad before relying on the service.
Free callback handoff template
When another teammate needs to continue the conversation, record the customer’s request, an owner, the agreed time and timezone, the outcome and the next action. Keep unanswered calls separate from completed commitments.
Download the blank callback handoff template (CSV). Open it in your spreadsheet app and adapt the fields to your team. No account or payment is needed for this file.
Use a customer reference rather than a phone number on a shared sheet. Keep private details in your approved customer system and share only with authorized teammates. This is a manual worksheet; it does not sync with KVWang, place calls or send reminders.
Common questions
Does the person I call need a computer or KVWang account?
For a supported call to an ordinary telephone number, the customer answers their phone. Your side uses the browser workspace and its calling service.
Do I need to install an app to call from a browser?
A browser-based calling workspace does not inherently require a separate installed softphone. Account setup, supported-browser requirements and microphone permission still apply.
Can I use any US number, or change the outgoing caller ID?
No. Use the outgoing number approved and assigned to your team. The workspace checks the destination separately. Registration alone does not supply a usable line.
How do I keep track of the follow-up?
Save a note and next action after the call. See the US customer follow-up workflow and requested customer callback workflow.
